The proposal lives entirely in the future tense. Your final paper describes results you actually got; the proposal describes results you expect and defends the methods you’ll use to find them. Title — Specific, descriptive, and honest. “Examining the Relationship Between X and Y” beats “A Study of X.” The title is the first promise you make; don’t make it vague. 

Abstract / summary — A 150–250 word stand-alone version of the whole plan: problem, gap, method, expected contribution. Write this last, even though it appears first. 

Introduction and background — Set the stakes. Why does this topic matter, to whom, and right now? Anchor every claim in cited work from real sources like Google Scholar rather than assertion. 

Research question(s) — The load-bearing wall of the proposal. One primary question, possibly with two or three sub-questions. This section should be impossible to miss. 

Literature review — Prove the gap exists. You’re not summarizing everything ever written; you’re mapping the territory and drawing a circle around the empty spot your work will fill. Reference managers like Zotero and Mendeley keep this sane. 

Methodology — The make-or-break section. What you’ll do, how, with what data, and how you’ll analyze it. More detail below. 

Timeline / feasibility — Show the work fits the time you have. A simple table or Gantt-style schedule signals competence instantly. 

References — Format it correctly and completely. A sloppy reference list tells reviewers you don’t respect the conventions of the field. 

A detail most writers miss: reviewers often read the methodology before the introduction — because if the methods are incoherent, the background doesn’t matter. Budget your effort accordingly, and never bury your research question in a wall of background text. 

Writing a Research Question That Holds Up 

A weak research question is the fastest way to a “needs more focus” verdict. A strong one does three jobs at once: it’s specific, it’s answerable, and it signals a gap. 

The test: can a skeptical reviewer immediately picture what data you’d collect and what an answer would look like? If not, it’s still a topic, not a question.

The difference isn’t word count — it’s that the second version names a population, a variable, and a measurable relationship. You can literally picture the survey, the sample, and the statistical test.

Run your question through this table. If any cell is empty, the question isn’t ready. This one habit — filling all four cells — eliminates most “too broad” rejections before they happen. 

It’s also worth stating, in plain terms, why the question matters and to whom. “This matters” is an assertion; “this matters to public-health researchers deciding where to target early-intervention resources” is an argument. The second one gives a reviewer something to agree with. 

Writing an Introduction That Sets the Right Stakes 

The introduction’s job is not to impress with breadth — it’s to make a reviewer care quickly. The most effective pattern is a funnel: broad context in one or two sentences, then a sharp descent to the specific gap, then your question. 

Most writers get the funnel backwards. They spend a page on grand context (“in an increasingly digital society…”) and bury the actual gap in the last paragraph. A reviewer who’s read thirty proposals will have stopped paying attention by then. 

Instead, structure it like this: 

The stakes — one or two sentences establishing why anyone should care, grounded in a cited, current source. 

The gap — what the existing research doesn’t answer. This is the sentence that justifies your entire project, so make it specific and name the studies you’re extending. 

The question — your research question, stated plainly and placed where no one can miss it. 

The roadmap — one sentence telling the reader what the proposal covers. 

Keep the introduction to roughly a page for a thesis proposal. If it runs longer, you’re probably front-loading literature review material that belongs in its own section. And cite the specific works you’re building on — a proposal that names real, verifiable prior studies reads dramatically more credible than one that gestures at “the literature.” 

Building a Methodology Section Reviewers Trust 

If the research question is the load-bearing wall, the methodology is the foundation. Reviewers want to see that you’ve thought through how, not just what. A vague methodology is the number-two reason proposals get bounced. 

The rule is simple: be specific enough that another researcher could replicate your study from your description alone. Here’s what that looks like across the three main approaches:

Two short paragraphs that pay off disproportionately: limitations and ethics. Acknowledging “this design can’t establish causation” or “I’ll seek IRB approval before recruiting” reads as maturity, not weakness. Reviewers reward the writer who already knows their study’s boundaries — it’s the single strongest signal that you actually understand your own plan. 

Showing You Can Actually Finish (Feasibility and Timeline) 

Funding bodies and thesis committees are allergic to the word “eventually.” They’ve watched too many projects balloon past every deadline. A realistic timeline is cheap to write and expensive to skip.

Map this against your actual calendar, not your ambitions. If you have eight weeks and the plan needs sixteen, the reviewer will catch it — and “narrow the scope” is a much better outcome than “rejected for infeasibility.” 

Also name your resources and access: which dataset, which archive, which population, and how you’ll reach them. “I have secured access to X” is far stronger than “I hope to study X.” The same goes for skills — if the methodology requires a statistical technique you don’t yet know, either say how you’ll acquire it or adjust the method. Feasibility is where reviewers most often find the fatal flaw.

The starting topic: “I want to study remote work and productivity.” 

That’s a topic, not a question. It fails every cell of the four-cell test — no population, no named variables, no measurable relationship, no boundary. A reviewer reading it can’t picture the study at all. 

Step one — narrow the population. Instead of “workers,” pick a group and context: “full-time software engineers at mid-size tech companies who shifted to fully remote work during the last two years.” 

Step two — name the variables. Instead of “productivity,” pick something measurable: “self-reported weekly output” and “hours of asynchronous collaboration per week.” 

Step three — state the relationship. Instead of “and,” commit to a direction: “what is the relationship between asynchronous collaboration hours and self-reported output?” 

Step four — draw the boundary. Say what you’re not studying: “this excludes fully in-person teams and focuses on individual contributors, not managers.” 

The result: “What is the relationship between weekly hours of asynchronous collaboration and self-reported output among full-time software engineers who transitioned to fully remote work at mid-size tech companies within the last two years?” 

Suddenly the survey, the sample, and the analysis are all obvious. That’s the point: a precise question generates a precise methodology almost automatically. The proposal almost writes itself from there — the methodology section becomes “how I’ll measure those two variables and test that relationship,” and the feasibility section becomes “whether I can reach that population.” 

This is the same move you can apply to any topic. Write down the four cells, force yourself to fill each one, and read the resulting sentence aloud. If it sounds specific to the point of being a little awkward, you’re probably on the right track. 

The 15-Minute Self-Check Before You Submit
