Part 2: The Gap (3-5 sentences)
Now that you’ve hooked your reader, show them exactly what’s missing from existing research.
This is where most students get vague. They write “few studies have examined this topic” when what they mean is “existing studies have looked at X and Y but nobody has looked at Z — and Z matters because…”
Be specific about what previous research has done, and name it.

You’re not just saying “there’s a gap.” You’re showing the shape of the gap and how your work fills it.
Part 3: The Thesis (1-3 sentences)
Your thesis isn’t a topic announcement. It’s an argument — a claim that someone could reasonably disagree with.
Not a thesis: “This paper examines the effect of remote work on employee productivity.”
Thesis: “Remote work increases individual productivity for task-based roles but decreases collaborative output — and the net effect depends on whether the organization measures individuals or teams.”

This version tells readers what they’ll learn, not how the document is organized.

The “before” announces a topic. The “after” raises a puzzle, makes a claim, and shows the reader why the answer matters beyond this one paper.
